I think I read Fumi's comment totally different than others here, for me it seemed like she was dissing Mitsumi behind her back saying she's not good at anything besides studying? But everyone's comments here made me think I misread the subtext.

Other people have responded to this, but I want to add that the line is also a callback to chapter 1, when Fumi went to visit the family after Mitsumi's first day at high school. She told them on the phone that everything went perfectly on her first day, and everyone back home figured that was a big fat lie, with her mom saying the same thing about how studying is the only thing she's good at. It's like the common perception of her friends and family, not something Fumi is just dropping here out of the blue. (But back then too, it clearly comes from a place of love).

I don't think she's dissing her, it's just a way to say that she's not good in understanding love relationships. It's not true she's just good at studying though. She's good at making friends and bringing people together. And that is not something studying brings you.

i'm invested in skip and loafer whether mitsumi and shima get together or not, but i personally think they will end up with each other.. while the author is very clearly invested in a sense of realism in terms of relationship writing, i feel like they have good chemistry and are really cute together! they're just kids, so they clearly need to do a little bit of growing up and maturing and self-realization before they can truly understand their feelings for each other. these kinds of things are really important to not rush..

Being afraid of drifting apart from your friends, insecure that they'll leave you after doing/pursuing cool shit, and then acknowledging that being friends isn't just about frequency but feels. All of which is topped off with us the reader literally experiencing the infrequency of their interactions in the reading experience, goated chapter

also fumi ftw, make that man question his feelings bc yeah mitsumi is smart, but she's kinda oblivious to everything that isn't about studying. by saying that, it's like fumi is asking shima why is he letting mitsumi tell him what his feelings are and why didn't he correct her if she was wrong. fumi is mitsumi's wake up call, and i love that she's being shima's wake up call too.
