Is this why people make fun of the French? calling them cowards?
I've seen the stereotype about Italians being cowards, but not the French. In the case of the French, their stereotype is for being easy to defeat, which they got after surrendering to Nazi Germany a few weeks after being invaded.

I'll go on a limb and say the enemy has strong AA presence there as well, as per proper combined warfare doctrines, and so they've chosen the safer option of being pinned down by artillery on the ground rather than being blown out of the sky
From the conversations it seemed like they were supposed to be flying through that aa to hit the artillery anyways though.

Saturation bombardment thats why. Even an elite mage wont survive if they got hit by an artillery shell in midair. Theres enough artillery falling on them that the risk of having casualties by just taking off is too great.

They werent pin down when flying they were redeploying and were caught by artillery while still on the ground, when flying their only real threat is either other mages or enough anti air weaponry if they fly too low
They shouldn't be redeploying in range of enemy artillery, they fly very quickly so they should land at the back and redeploy there in relative safety and lose like maybe 10 seconds worth of distance
If I remember correctly, their doctrine is to use artillery guns or bomber planes to destroy enemy trenches and/or defensive positions first, followed by tanks and infantry, while flight mages like 203 wing are normally sent in for sweeping/observer hunting/base sniping, and so on. They are essentially low-altitude fighters with laser-like arms. And in this case, I believe our honorable flight mage and his companions were unfortunately hit by an artillery shell before they could take off. On the battlefield, anything can happen :boomer:
Flight mages replace bomber planes in this setting for that strategy. Bombers are used in strategic long range bombings from higher up than what mages fly at as planes get wiped out by mages at low altitudes, the only advantage planes have is being able to fly higher. 203 should be blowing up enemy trenches from the skies in that strategy, and taking off from the rear hq instead of from a Frontline trench (nobody launches fighters from areas where infantry are clashing, they're always at the back in safety because they cover distance so quickly it doesn't matter if they're 20 km behind the front line)

That was one hell of a good chapter. Tanya must shine so she can get that rear assignment. Thanks for the translation

Nah, did you forget the father? He was concerned with Tanya being a child and talked to her directly about it. In the end, I recall him taking a more safer position (to support his family) and Tanya climbing the ranks (by taking his place).
Oh. The 2nd one then.

RIP one of the twelve knights. Should've know he was doomed when i didn't remember his name. Been reading the LN recently so surprised to see someone that seemed importantish but didn't know the name of.

Also that one soldier lol an elite mage of the devil's battalion but defeated by potatoes lol.

never thought of it before but aren't they hot in those uniforms?
Not as much as the normal troops, they have spells to regulate bodily functions/requirements which include things like temperature and oxygen.

Flight mages replace attack helicopters and fighter jets. They're all rounders that can provide everything from close air support to scouting to air superiority and even comms support. The only one doing strategic heavy bombardment comparable to a bomber is Tanya herself.

I don't really buy the assessment that they're being redeployed at the front. Rather, considering the fact that the combat group HQ got taken out it's more likely the battlefield is in chaos. 203 was probably stationed close to the front for rapid response or to ambush enemy artillery/tanks as it moved forward but got pinned down by the rapid shift in the battle lines complicated by the communications failure.

Nice of them to reference that one guy who ate bad potatoes and got sent home, and implying its not common knowledge.

It adds a bit more to the mythos of the 203rd, and implies command kept a tight lip concerning it.
And the rookie whose get shooted when in rinhee

It's likely even simpler than that. AA guns ARE artillery (specialised, but still artillery). The famous 88mm Flak cannon was originally a tank killer (and still used for that role almost interchangeably during the war).

Am I mandeling myself, or did you just mix up the original intent with on-field discoveries?

Edit: Yeah, you totes got that in reverse, Flugabwehrkanone was made as anti air weapon and only then repurposed as tank killer
