She basically communicated without saying outright that she was into Shigisawa when they were working together. It's not like this is (just) acting out over her husband being shitty.

At this point, she's tried being married to a man and she's clearly decided it's too much for her. To her, the possibility of getting together with an old crush must be so tempting that she can't hold back while drunk after a bad day.

Because She IS straight, for now at least. From what the author show us and the way Shigisawa saw her, yes She is straight. And she even confirmed it in this chapter. Her main goal in life was to marry a man, have babies, and that's it. At chapter 2, Gotou is still straight, maybe she has some curiosity for women (Shigisawa) by what we saw at the end of the chapter, but for now she's straight. Also, straight girl behavior ? Is that a thing. Everyone have their own behavior, being straight or not.

And when they were working together she was just fascinated and impressed by Shigisawa because she was capable at work and could do anything by herself unlike her. Again she said it in this chapter. She was so impressed because she could never have imagined one day to see a woman being so capable and reliable at work like Shigisawa. Her joining the company was just to find a man to marry and I think, She told herself that it was the same case for all other women in the company. Love and admiration are two different things. The only person who have a BIG crush on someone here is Shigisawa. And I'm pretty sure Gotou know that Shigisawa loves her, and maybe that she is gay.

Of course, at the end of the story she will be with Shigisawa, so she will be a lesbian or at least bi/pan. Literally this story it's about her discovering her new sexuality and Shigisawa to fall in love again and trust her lover to not backstab her AGAIN to go live the Japanese straight dream.

Also, the scene when the two of them are drinking and start to be really close.... This kind of scene needs to die, It's so cliché. Using alcohol to be close with someone can lead to some really messy and serious shits after.

You are affirming something that we don't even know. Let's say that Gotou is a lesbian or Bi, how do you know that ? Because she pined down another woman so she's gay ? So every woman who pin down another woman are gay ?
Shigisawa said that she is gay and only attire to women. But for Gotou we don't fucking know. She could have dated another woman before and even identify herself as Lesbian, Bisexual or Pansexual but for now we don't fucking know. Nothing in the story said it. For now, she just showed some physical interest to Shigisawa but other than that all her others actions and the way the others picture her implies that she is straight.

Actually this entire chapter was really painful and relatable, especially burrowing into the fantasy of a dream when that's all you have left. "Oh, this is a dream. At least let me be happy here." like goddamn Kodama we know you don't like fluff but at least include a coupon for counseling sessions if it's going to get harder from here 💀

Did you only skim this chapter? She came at someone very clearly had a crush on with sexual intent. She is extremely obviously attracted to Shigisawa, a girl, so she's certainly not a straight woman.

Like... You give a lot of arguments that simply don't engage with the text which communicates in clear terms that Gotō is attracted to women.

Being gay isn't something you typically transform into. She's been gay longer than she's known she's gay. So has every lesbian. We've all had to figure our sexuality out, but this hardly means we were straight before that.

And she even could have known she was into women before this without any of this being some sort of ridiculous scheme.

Honestly the story doesn't give us enough elements to determine whetever the freeloader girl is straight,bi or gay.
Wanting to marry a man doesn't equals being straight. Granted is easier being at least bi then being gay to do so, but the world is full of loveless marriages, especially in places were arranged marriages are common and/or the peer pressure of being married is high.
Personally I think she may be bi, honestly wanting a place in the "heteronormative society" having an husband and a child. She choose a rich one (whtever love was involved or not is still to be seen), but then the child didn't come (maybe she is sterile), and she reconsidered her position thinking this would crash her expectation of having a place in the society. And so she may want to act closer to her true self instead of how society whished her to act.

Idk how you read the first two chapters and come away with the opinion that she has to be straight when the main thesis of the story is sexual minorities and women having to conform to society against their will. Characters dealing with Comphet isn't anything new in Kodama Naoko's stories.
