Yeah, this is questionable at best as armor. Even if it can miraculously stop błades from penetrating, it does nothing for lessening the impact force. What is he even going to use this for, ballet?
Emma did state that they hadn't added armour yet, so in this state it's more or less gambeson or an arming doublet, only with the durability of steel. Not getting cut is better than being naked, but a body suit offers less protection than just wearing several shirts. Several shirts stops blows from padding and also prevents cuts by sheer mass and also doesn't actually restrict movement. It's not invincible, but it's very cheap to make and offers substantial protection.
This is why gambeson was the most popular armor in the medieval period.
This is probably where a lot of the confusion is stemming from. I got the impression they were referring to the fox pelt as having those attributes of itself. The mirage fox content is ambiguous (confused even the translator), but...
""It's a material that presents all sorts of risks, but the rewards from it would be huge! With it, it would be possible to imbue your armour with an enchantment of self healing.""
Rewards doesn't necessarily mean financial rewards, but this makes it sound like "With it" means "With the material." As in, "With the material, it would be possible to imbue your armor."
However this is relying on grammar cues in a translation from a language with different grammar. If "it" can refer to "rewards" despite "rewards" being plural and rewards means financial rewards, we could interpret their whole conversation as being about selling it. Not knowing any Japanese myself, I still find it more likely they are using some fox component.
Anyway...
Low-tier noble with middle manager blues, how sympathetic Yajin is. What luck, it created the perfect setup for... the Best Possible Outcome™
- new powerful ally
- get rid of dangerous item
- gain substantial sum of cash
Sand lizard gloves was a cool touch. Yajin almost got bested by his new armour - everything in this world is out to get him.
See how the siblings are looking at Yajin on page 11, Emma with her hand hanging in the air? You can sense how they, at least her, are still surprised at the amount of thought Yajin is putting into this. Still, Yajin is going to have to keep some lard or oil on him for this setup huh. I wonder if his newly hightened sense of touch helped him conceptualize how to don the armour.
Yajin getting to show off for once - getting smiths of this class to drop their jaws, his movements must look absolutely unreal. A body honed into a weapon.
Funny that they'd have a basin and a mud pit for fitting purposes. Getting washed off by Emma huh... I'm not jealous...
They take it very serious, real combat test during initial fitting. Where did Ben get his training? Was he a squire? Noble blood?
Ahh the details of this manga, it's top-tier after all. One of the kind which engages you to the degree that you re-read each page a few times before moving on, visualizing yourself in the situations and trying to feel the moments, thinking of what you'd do etc.
Thank you for another sweet chapter! I hope Ben doesn't die!
