Imagine you're the guy in Eromanga-sensei where you start liking your totally non-blood-related little sister. Actually any incest anime would be fine...

Are you the type to go full-throttle on that pop bottle or will you lay off on your step-sibling? Your argument? I'm totally not asking totally not because a situation irl is totally is not alike this.

Welp formatting doesn't work on polls.

I'm on team No Chromo. They're genetic strangers, even if you grew up with them. Basically a childhood friend who you can call a sibling. Personally I'd say it's okay.

Well, it depends on when I got my hypothetical step sibling. If it was during early childhood, then likely not. but, if it was during my teenage years and beyond, then yeah, maybe.

It's fine. Not blood-related incest sounds like someone is roleplaying incest.

@DANDAN_THE_DANDAN According to Wikipedia...
"what!? You're quoting Wikipedia!? Wikipedia is...."

Yeah, yeah..
Incest is:
"...sexual activity between family member or close relatives"

Emphasize on the word family member, it can also mean the non blood related one.
So, to keep it short.
Yes, it is incest even though they're not blood related.

@ABCsOfLife well if you're arguing that way,

Merriam-webster.com

: sexual intercourse between persons so closely related that they are forbidden by law to marry
also : the statutory crime of such a relationship

Dictionary.com

sexual intercourse between closely related persons.

Google

sexual relations between people classed as being too closely related to marry each other.
the crime of having sexual intercourse with a parent, child, sibling, or grandchild.

@DANDAN_THE_DANDAN so we're still include the Wikipedia then?
Then it's still an incest, even if they non blood related.
Also, word play.. Closely related can also include the non blood related.

@ABCsOfLife Depends on country, some countries include prohibitions of unions between biologically unrelated individuals if there is a close legal relationship, such as adoption or step relations. Other countries don't. I would say depends on culture.

@LowSanity prohibit?? What?
Oh no, I'm just trying to explain what incest is and can it be called incest if you're not related by blood.

Edit:
Oh that reminds me of some story I heard awhile back, I think it's on the United States if I recall correctly.
The story goes like..
They don't allow incest over there, you can't go down on your own sister but, there's no problem if you go down on your own brother. How so? If I recall they said something about you can't procreate with your own brother if you're a guy. 😂

@ABCsOfLife I was talking 'bout legal stuff.
Consensual incest is legal in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Russia(family members whether it be “step” or “half” related may not marry). However, in Italy if the situation becomes a public scandal then it becomes punishable with 2-8 years in jail. In terms of France, Luxembourg and Belgium, it is not necessary legal but there are no laws that prohibit the act.
Countries such as Greece, Latvia and Lithuania merely outlaw incest for adults but not minors.
Most laws regarding prohibited degree of kinship concern relations of r = 25% or higher, while most permit unions of individuals with r = 12.5% or lower.

@LowSanity Why call me out then? 😂
I thought you were trying to argue wheter can it be incestuous or not in the case of not related by blood, you know.. since I am talking about that, not if it's legal or not.

With legality and genetics out of the way, there are still a lot of areas to have a heated argument over so here's my inputs.

"Incest is bad" is a modern social stigma. How can I be so sure?

Royal Intermarriage
Genesis 20:12 "Besides, she actually is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife"
(Abraham married his half-sister, Sarah, in the Bible)

So if there are no genetic defect risks I'd say just screw society and go for it.

Also, let's look at a situation here.

This manga is about a pair of real, blood-related siblings who were encouraged to marry each other because their genes are so compatible that their child are likely to be the next Einstein or something. (And also why I started this thread)

If this story were to be hypothetically true, would you guys think this is acceptable? They are real siblings with barely any risks for genetic defects.

In this situation I'm still in team No Chromo although it's Full Chromo in this situation. If they are genetically compatible, why not?

@DANDAN_THE_DANDAN i'm 100% fine with no chromo. I'm not sure if i would be fine with this manga situation. I haven't read it. Encouraging ppl to marry based on genes, i'm not sure if i like this idea. If the siblings somehow had 0% risk(i don't think it's possible in real world but who knows) then i would be fine with their relationship but not with the encouragement.

At what point does it become incest? 3rd cousin? 2nd? 1st? sister?
self? I saw what you were doing last night.
How many 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th cousins marry each other?
If we say 10th cousin is incest, how common would it be?
This needs research!

@DANDAN_THE_DANDAN

Concerning the question of the topic and the example you use whether it’s consider incest or not depends on how the law is defining the term. As you know generally incest is the action of relatives who are biologically related having sexual intercourse with each other. However sometimes it can stem to even people who are not related by blood but are consider relatives by law. So if incest define by Japanese law is simply relatives who are closely related to each other having sex together then the situation that happens in Eromanga-sensei would not count, but if the definition extends to refer to relatives who are only associated by law then that is when a problem arises. Of course even if Japanese law did define incest as the formal there is the fact there’s a huge stigma of the idea of siblings, regardless of whether they are biologically related or not, having sex, let alone making our by means of hugging and kissing in general. So there is the fact the protagonist of the story has to contend with society (and that is assuming he and his sister do actually decide to become a couple).

Oh and one more thing, while I did mention this a few times I am going to say this anyway which is it only counts as incest of the two relatives in question actually have sexual intercourse with each other. Simply having a crush over each other or even kissing for that matter does not count, especially the kissing part as relatives do kiss each other (just not in a romantic way). I thought to mention this because I know some people get this definition confuse.

As for the question of what I would do in this scenario, I would choose the latter as I do not want to have sex with any women until I feel we are close enough (probably at the level of being intimate friends) in which we both feel enough trust in each other as well as have build enough affection (or Philia) towards each other. Simple having romantic (or eros) feelings for a woman is not enough for me to feel fully secure in having sex with her or even making out for that matter.

P.S If you do not mind me asking do you relate to the story or characters of Eromanga-Sensai?
