Manischewitz isn't actually traditional, but it became a standard because it's not expensive and easily available. It's very sweet because the grapes that grow in New York are sour, and lots of sugar makes it more palatable. By tradition, really any alcohol will do. Whiskey is common. My great grandfather that I'm named after used to prefer schnapps, a preference likely carried over from when they left/fled Europe. So I'm going to guess that it's 100 proof hot cinnamon liquor.
