So, it's the kind of clan where an individual becomes the boss by slaying the old boss and the old boss's closest supporters. That's quite a troublesome system for outsiders interested in more permanent deals and treaties, as it's quite unpredictable: the new boss has quite a high chance of possessing totally opposite opinions compared to the old boss.

Might also be that he is the head of the Party that allied with the Hostile Demons. The other party is quite heavy on "Might makes right" after all and if it was enough to just kill his dad he wouldn't need to slaughter the rest of the clan.

That was a cliffhanger, and daddy became a spearhanger. Sonny boy probably was the one who coordinated the attack.

TheShear is correct. The son is the head of the conspirators. I don't remember if the novel states how succession works, but it's a bit of a moot point since
the birdmen who survive are no longer neutral AT ALL--they are out for the blood of the faction the attackers are part of

It's definitely worth noting that this has some noticeable changes from the light novel. The chief doesn't die "on-screen"--he's the one who mistakenly yells at hero girl. He does still get stabbed by his son (and i believe the novel makes it seem like his likelihood of surviving the wound are non-existent), but he doesn't immediately die.

(Putting this next part in a spoiler because I'm not sure how much will be shown in the next manga chapters)
He
sends the hero & friends away from the village with the many wounded (the novel implied that the birdmen tended to BEAT their attackers and only flee due to the betrayal), elderly (specifically the ones no longer physically capable of fighting), women, and children. The chief gives his son some solid shit-talking and then starts fighting the traitors. While it isn't clear how much the chief did before he died, I do remember that NONE of the traitor faction are able to chase the fleeing tribe (and only the very few warriors with zero injuries stayed to fight with the chief). Unfortunately, his son does survive.

So, there was the stupid prince, then black dragon, and now the birdman, it seems the author setting up “having no respect or even care for the elderly/parents” to be one of the antagonist traits of this series.
