If this was treated as a “how I met your mother” prequel for a romance comedy 4-Koma of Yandere Haruto and his naive but happily loved Mahoro, I might like to see a few panels of that. I like the idea of a puppet master protecting a puppy.

He's really the "Not all men" caution in this story. I swear we get it!

This is why I don't like Japanese stories about sexism, misogyny, or, should I say, feminism (I'm pretty sure the author wouldn't consider her work feminist).
They are always trying to find some kind of balance between pointing out a problem and not accusing the perpetrator too much or finding them excuses.

The fact that the only good guy is also the love interest for Mahoro reinforces this sensation that he did it just to fuck her. I'm sure it wasn't intentional, and he's more there to reassure straight women and, indirectly, straight men.

Or he's the authors wish for someone to have been there to stop her from doing what she did. Judging by some comments a version of these events are true but haruto isnt a real person. Since haruto wasn't actually there the story changes a little. He wasn't there to stop her from confronting her friend and rei at the restaurant. Or to stop rei friend for excusing cheating. Subtle changes can be represented by haruto as the authors regrets knowing the context.

Even if Rei did end up doing something shitty and illegal after being left, at least Mahoro has witnesses to vouch for her as they report it to the police.

Unfortunately, I don't think they can report him for SA as things are, since he didn't go all the way, and it didn't look like he grabbed/pinned her down hard enough to leave noticeable bruises to show the police. Still, despite leaving her belongings and forms behind, getting her out of there ASAP was the most viable option at the time, as things could have gone way worse had Momoka and Haruto not come around to check on her.
