Boy wtf? the pacing is way too fast goddamnit, 1 page is giving a tragic and for me the subject can easily be viewed as down right horrific summary of what happened due to his departure, and the next page is a 2 years time skip with a happy theme and a new characteristic for Wynn, how am I suppose to take all this at once?
I think that might be the point…

Reading this as a rather solitary adult somewhat reminds me of having E.B. White's Stuart Little read to me by my mom when I was a very young child. There's quietly something heartbreaking about the main character's cheerful but untroubled observation of the lives of others -- as they pass through his own like water.

I get that Aesir is emotionally healthy and does not need constant messages of reassurance and acceptance from those he loves in order to feel "at home" in the world. But I'm so far from that myself that it feels alien (this, I realize, is exactly the point). As a result, there's something terribly lonely about not just this wrenching chapter, but the whole story.

Which is just to say :meguuusad:

The pacing is from the perspective of MC whose flow of time differs from Humans.
To him, a year or two is like a few months, so odd time-skips are quite a lot understandable.

That was kind of sad. She was so in love with him she wanted children just so that when he returns and she's already dead, there's someone there for him. Good thing she loved her children and not viewed as a torch bearer for Aesir's return.

How thoughtful of them to aid a desperate girl at the cost of their own relationship.
Paints the heartache of friendship between races due to their difference in lifespan. Aesir is lucky to be surrounded by good-natured people.

Coming back to this, and I have to say Kaeha's love is one of the most beautiful things ive ever seen in manga/anime media. She knows that her time is limited, so she solidifies herself as something that Aesir will never forget- be it the way of the sword that was honed through love, her dojo, her successors--- All of it, all of it. All so that Aesir would always have something to come back to, even when she's long gone. The amount of selflessness and love she has is just beyond what any person would do- I'd love for the author to make it so that there is a timeline where both of them end up together, she deserves at least that, doesnt she?

Oh man can't you just marry her and stuff her face with those rejuvenation fruits? It's a high fantasy world and he's basically a half spiritual being, how come there is nothing to prevent dying of old age? Heck, become a vampire and make it a funny couple story.

Re-reading this manga (for like the third time) and what's really heartbreaking is the weight of Aesir's life on others. When he left the forest having remembered his former life as a human and with a complete understanding of high elves in this world, he was prepared to live life at a different pace than everyone around him. In some ways that's what he wanted, to experience change in shorter periods of time and just not live a slow life peaceful eternity in what was practically the garden of Eden. So while it hurts him to meet and part with so many people and know he'll outlive them all, he's prepared to deal with that. But I don't think he ever quite understood the effect he'd have on others. How those he'd form a bond with would respond to their massively different rates of aging.

This is the best example. When he left he light heartedly asked that the dojo be built up and style passed on so he could always come back and learn in the future. In his mind he was comforting and taking the stress of obligation to teach him immediately away (given the circumstances), but Kaeha was in love and failed to understand that. She took his words deeply to heart and devoted everything to a love she knew could never be. It's beautiful but so so tragic. I feel like this is such a turning point because it's the first time the MC really sees the imprints his life leads on others and how that can seriously affect them when he lives so much longer.

So, kinda like Himmel with his many statues so Frieren doesn't feel "lonely" in the future? I'M DOUBLING MY TEARS NOW :meguuusad: :meguuusad: :meguuusad:
