When you've been oppressed for your entire life, freedom is terrifying. That doesn't mean you should reject it, but it takes time to get used to. I look forward to seeing how she gets through this.
Anne's magical tattoos; that was such a cool moment in the book that really showed her dedication to magic. Hopefully its still coming, but it was a nice change to see a female Japanese protagonist with body tattoos.

in the medieval society they live in a blemish on a woman's skin is an extremely big deal that could potentially make her unmarriageable. Knowing that shows how dedicated Anne is to her craft to the point that she would willingly do such a thing to herself.
