Very true. One character I really like from another series is Sanya from the Dresden Files. He is a modern day paladin who wields the Sword of Hope. However, he is 100% agnostic, having no Faith in God, the Angels, or Fallen are mythical beings, noting they could be just very advanced aliens. And this is despite he once was possessed by a Fallen Angel, repented and expelled the Fallen, and was given his Sword by the Archangel Michael. He notes that he doesn't need to believe in God to just do the right thing and help people.
