Those little fairies are cute but disturbingly scary since they can on a whim stop giving magic and shit if they feel like it

The fairies in this manga are basically the exact same at the fairies in the Yankee isekai manga except that these ones are actually cool. And they do shit. And they have personality. Why is it always these shoujo-esque manga that seem to have some depth and nuance to them?

@ultraleaf i'd say that all stories with people that ask fairies or spirits for the usage of magic is in the same boat with that thought. the other stories simply haven't made a story point of one person, that's loved by the fairies, being put through hell and the fairies putting their foot down (figuratively) due to her simple, nondescript comment of wanting revenge.

Edit 1: Oh wait, was it due to the comment or did they just feel betrayed after she got put through hell?

Edit 2: After rechecking 3.2, it was definitely because of her comment.

@Aretheus IKR? i mean, MSXD is a shoujo manhwa and it has action scenes better than the average. it's like the shoujo label is just so the author can get away with more female charas

@pandacard: Sort of a mix of them
Not a big spoiler from the WN
The moment those guys lost the ability to use magic is actually when they exiled her, not when Ruri made her outburst.

From the POV of a spy nearby who can see the spirits, he was sweating profusely at how STUPID the humans (who can't see spirits) are with how they treat Ruri like that (he was watching the treason 'trial', and the spirits were staring daggers at those guys)
In fact the spirits were going to completely destroying the country outright, but the spy guy convinced them not to.
Saying that among those people here there's the people summoned with Ruri so they might be her friends and if those people die, Ruri will probably be sad.
(his real reason is that the citizens shouldn't suffer because of a stupid king's decision)

That said, just like how Ruri convinced them to stop their strikes, if she personally ask them to do it, they will.

@dethduck : Most powerful 'mortal'
The 12 highest ranking fairies are strong enough to defeat her if they want to, and lower ones can't really do much against those.

p.s. And of those 12, 3 are currently in contract with Ruri as of the last chapter I read.
Lydia (Time) herself a simple contract, basically a 'I'll help you out' type
Kotarou is actually another high ranking fairy, and in his case it's a "Name" contract.

To paraphrase Ruri's 3rd spirit:
IF Ruri order the 3 to fight against other high rank fairies.
Lydia can refuse if she want to.
But neither Kotarou nor the 3rd one can refuse her order.

Of course, if Kotarou/3rd doesn't want to be named, they could've easily reject and even kill Ruri outright.
That's how big of a deal the name contract is, and why spirits only take names from someone they really like.

No, it's more like everyone has been attributing the wrong things to the "shoujo" tag all along because it's a demographic label rather than an actual genre. I feel like what everyone calls "shoujo" or thinks of when someone says "shoujo" is actually "romantic drama for the young female demographic."
