And you didn't consider that each of the forts were within a day or two of each other, the temporary fort Kosuke erected was within a day's walk from them and they fell within a few days. Information don't travel fast in medieval socities. Even worse, you didn't even consider that they killed the messengers they sent to other forts to warn and ask for reinforcement, so nobody outside got the news the forts already fell, much less a merchant midway in his journey.

TLDR: Liberation army killed all messengers leaving the forts, no news flow out, no way in hell the Merchant would have known the forts already fell, not his logistical blunder.

yeah, dude was very justified in not knowing his deliveries were going to a conquered place or that he was currently in enemy ground from his original clients.

he was still delivering goods for their enemies, and as yourself pointed out transport was not quick and I doubt it was cheap.
so as much as he clearly wished for more, at least he was paid some compensation for his goods and trouble.

he can only hope that they are more generous with things they do buy from him in the future

Reputation is also important in a war, so when they had semi-neutral observers (the merchants), they chose to demonstrate that the demi-humans totally could just march up to a Holy Kingdom fortress and kick the shit out of it head on with no losses whatsoever (until that one knight).
This will get back get back to the human side of things and make something something politics happen. (And also help obfuscate how they are actually having such success.)
