... The soldiers of Mazewood are fucking imbeciles.

You're being besieged by an enemy that has effortlessly destroyed your other forts, easily snipes your commanding officer with an unknown weapon that obliterates his head, and then proceed to casually destroy your front gates beyond hope of (quick) repair.

That same enemy then offers to let you surrender with the promise of no harm befalling you... And they decide to fight to the death. Fucking morons.
As I recall, it was because of the confusion of the chain of command paralyzing the conscripts enough the other soldiers were able to keep them in line.

For who is asking:
The
traitor is a foxman that escorts MC alone in a city, he knocks him out and gives him to the human nation, MC gets put in a castle cell but the humans didn't follow the beastman instructions/advise and didn't bind him, so he escaped by digging vertically below, I've read the chapter a year ago and the TL was a bit weird about what happened after that, anyway is everyone fault that MC got kidnapped as a single guard not close to the princess was a stupid move (author forced that arc hard)
.

I'm with the other users on the fortress not surrending because the chain of command was in disorder and princess giving them way too little time, had it been 3 to 5 minutes I think they would have surrended.

MC stupid pride tells him to stand on the frontline because is wrong (no honor) to just produce weapons and stay in the safe backlines, that is the mindset of a retard as he litreally is the reason the non human nation can finally fight back against their oppressors, and a single good arrow to the head or fireball could easily take him out in one shot.
The possibility of all his "miracles" dissapearing or stopping working on his death is very high.

30 seconds? That's not enough time for a single person to make such a big decision. And I imagine that even if they were really contemplating surrendering, they need to talk things through with their direct inferiors (to avoid sudden revolts or misunderstandings). Plus, if you kill the commander, they'll need even more time to reorganize the chain of command.

Even in a fantasy universe, the actions of the attackers make very little sense.

Yeah, I've looked at the upcoming raws, and I can only hope it's a short digression.
Given his strange powers, I'm wondering how long you could even keep him imprisoned.
don't worry. it doesn't take too long to resolve... granted, this might take a dozen or so chapters before
he returns

in every war, it took 1 hour (at minimum) to discuss and raise the white flag. I guess the princess just wants to slaughter them and be done with it.

The soldiers were confused and panicking because they suddenly lost their commander (the leader at the frontline) and their front gate. And yet Sylphy only gave them 30 seconds. Mere soldiers would not dare to really do anything because they're just soldiers, and those with authority at the back (which most likely was in chaos) may not have enough time to respond. Not to mention how many of them were paralyzed with fear.

When Sylphy said that the enemy declined her surrender proposal, it most likely because the enemy didn't raise the white flag within 30 seconds. There was no detail mentioned afterward aside from Mazewood was conquered with only minor casualties. Those minor casualties may be caused by some soldiers retaliating to the assault, rather than all of them fighting to the death. The news reached MC in the afternoon, but there was no detail on how long that battle lasted.

The 30 seconds is a mistranslation, it should be "Half an Hour" according to the raw (半刻).
And that's how the forum turned Sylphy into a villain from now on.

So in the last chapter, literally right at the start, it's noted that a fortress surrendered after bombing because the commanding officer survived the initial attack, and that nobody else but that officer had the authority to declare a surrender. There was also an acknowledgement that this (the death of commanders) was likely why surrenders weren't happening before.

Then in this chapter, they open with shooting the one person who could make a surrender naturally happen, and give effectively zero time (disorganized surrenders of whole towns and armies take hours at minimum, not minutes or seconds) for those remaining to (unilaterally) decide to break and disobey what seems to be a very ironclad chain of command in order to surrender.

So either the "good guys" are a bunch of morons who completely forget how their enemy operates between chapters, or are very deliberately carrying out their battles in a certain way so that they can wage war as they always have (slaughtering the enemy wholesale in reprisal/revenge) while maintaining an illusion that they are being humane and just, in order to trick and appease the individual who is single-handedly enabling their army to function and succeed.

Kousuke taught them what the "etiquette" of modern warfare is, but (I believe realistically) a medieval-era society simply is not capable of genuinely implementing such concepts and at most would pay lip service to the ideals.

When the concept of war is conscripting peasants, feeding the army off looting, and bludgeoning your mass of lives against the enemy's until one mass flees, there is no place or time during war for peaceful surrenders, mass incarceration of captured/surrendered prisoners, or protection of conquered populations. Elements of this persisted even into WWII and later "modern" conflicts.

Now, Kousuke has provided his side with the equipment that gives them that place and time, but their medieval mindset doesn't magically change to modern sensibilities along with it. This is a time and setting where you beat your enemy by killing them all, civilians are only a means to fuel the army in one way or another, and reprisal against those who stand against you is expected and justified.

That mentality doesn't go away just because the guy who gave you the tools to do all of the above much more effectively said it was bad. But if you can trick the guy into thinking you're playing by his rules, he'll keep making you new tools.

TL;DR The author has either deliberately written the "protagonist" army to be cold and cunning while pretending to be righteous as a means of deceiving the MC, or accidentally written them to be idiots who can't comprehend how two related concepts ("only commanders can order surrenders" and "we genuinely want the enemy to surrender") fit together and are just cluelessly sabotaging their own efforts.

Half an hour still wouldn't be nearly enough though, considering how wrecked their chain of commands were and how the people were scared shitless. They need time to send information from the frontline, calm the masses, reestablish the chain of commands, gather those who hold authorities for a meeting, discuss their options, send the result of their discussion to the people, in which the white flag can finally be raised. All of those needs a lot of time, especially in medieval era.

@Vanness Oh, I know that part. I'm thinking in general. You can't seal magic that doesn't exist. You can't "disarm" him. What could you possibly do that wouldn't permanently ruin his value as an asset.
Qubi, obviously knows a bit more about his powers than the humans, and tells them to bind him. But would that even work? The standard interface seems to just need Fingers. Maybe if you did the Hannibal Lector Full Body suit, but even then, he can disappear a wall with a touch of a tool.

It does make little sense to only give 30 seconds to surrender when your chain of command just got disrupted through the elimination of the sitting commander. :thonk:
You pull that when you don't actually want a surrender and merely need a pretext.

In this case, miss dark elf is strongly prioritizing the safety of her army in most of these decisions, a somewhat callous stance but hardly something you can blame after what they've endured.
