This story feels borderline nonsensical. We live in an information age. No "gamer" is so deluded as to think that being able to pull off a 360-noscope in COD somehow translates into actual battlefield skills. Everyone knows that war is brutal, and trench war especially so. No real modern person would ever volunteer to join a WW1-style military unless there was absolutely no other choice.

Like bro, just "invent" the concept of a ponzi scheme, or multi-level marketing, or found a cult, or whatever. There are hundreds of legal and less-than-legal ways to make a living in an early-capitalist society that don't require skills or funds.

You underestimate the stupidity of gamers.

mc is not the first idiot to think that games and war are similar

1- no they aren't is not the same being behind a screen that being on the field, with the smells, noises, explosions, yells.
2-used to positioning in game maps designed to have places for sneaking, sniping, etc.

Even just the load of the equipment is something that will not let the gamer "move or act" as he wants, plus if like the mc, the gamer is just a foot soldier, it just needs his immediate leader to make a bad decision to send the gamer to an earlier grave.

Probably would die from radiation poisoning even before being able to refine the material needed for nuclear work.
Most importantly in their current state, something I don't see anyone touching on is the sheer physical strength and stamina necessary to do all that. There's no such problem playing a video-game character, but if you try to do what you do in-game in real life, good luck getting even a tenth of that done if keyboards and gamepads were your only exposure.

What was even the point of emphasising that she was a 'gamer' in her previous life if none of it's applicable here?
No aim or tactics that she's learned from her previous life? No skills whatsoever? Why talk about her previous life if it's pointless, because it doesn't even feel like flavour text, it's just meaningless.
Probably, relatable despair. "If only they had isekai knowledge of war, they would have done so much better". Actually having the knowledge that the common manga/LN reader can reasonably acquire, but still end up being useless would drive home the feeling of futility.

Also, why is every 'modern army' in these isekai stories so influenced by the Germans? Do you need to copy Tanya the Evil's homework that much?
Except for the helmets, nothing about them seemed German. The names don't really sound German either. Trench warfare isn't unique to the Germans, and the Imperial Japanese experienced trench warfare against the Russians too.

Nuclear physics is notoriously hard to put into practice despite its theory being relatively simpler than other branches of physics.
Even jf you understood theory, theres still a billion caution step you must take.

Also for tactics, WW1 tactics is basically camping out until your enemies are bombed or gased to death or till tanks come out. But I highly doubt tanks would exist since artillery in this world is hella mobile and as previously mentioned in chapter 1, there's various forms of magic bullets as well.

At most he could probably put the enemy spotting skill into use, but I doubt he's as good as the commanders
WW1 tactics is more than that really. There's creeping barrages, undermining, trench raiding, etc. Lots of various things ppl did before tanks were invented.
Even if tanks were invented in this world, it wouldn't necessarily be the be all end all. When tanks were first employed during the battle of the Somme, they only had limited effectiveness. Combined arms tactics like those employed at the battle of Hamel would be needed, requiring coordination between multiple arms (Infantry, Artillery, Tanks and Air) to achieve victory.
Maybe MC's pro-gamer coordination could help, but I doubt MC would be able to do anything in their position rn lol.

Black collar is a German thing, right? Though probably not WW1

I'm not sure. If anything, military officer uniform is a costume genre in Japan, so it could have been an original take that just happen to resemble something historical.

This fictional army could be based on anything or nothing until it's explicitly specified.

A reincarnation story that is not a wish fulfilment fantasy? Sounds interesting!

Tanya is not really involved in this matter because the fetish on Prussian army had been there for much longer.

I think it's just the romance. Same as how medieval aristocrat stories got its fans because there are people who romanticize the lifestyle of aristocracy. The manners, the interaction from class system, the parties.

As for the military... the difference from modern military and warfare.
These days, it's either the special ops, or overwhelming force of combined arms. While on the back side, too much regulations and bureaucracy.
...maybe there are better words to describe it.

At best they would have really good reaction time but the problem is that you wouldn't have the physical ability to make use of that reaction speed.
You and others are underestimating basic stuff. It's not about noscoping BS or reactions times. it's about stuff like:
  • ALWAYS be aware of lines of sight on you. Don't stick your head out of the trench unless you absolutely have to.
  • General awareness of where people can hide and where you can hide.
  • How to approach someone from behind == how YOU can be approached from behind.
  • Don't lose your cool when action kicks in after boredom. Regulate the adrenaline.

These are all things that will get a bunch of unknowing, newbie soldiers killed in their first 3-4 encounters, and which she's already familiar with. Yes being behind a screen is quite different from reality, but it's vastly better than going in with NO experience whatsoever.

Magic seems like it would be a lot more useful in precision and complicated work than plain old raw output work.
Like, if magic can be used to throw big rocks into the air at the cost of huge magic crystal expenditure, why not use that ability to move material remotely to do more precision work like assembly and manufacturing at likely much lower cost in magic crystals. Or for example replacing the firing mechanism for weapons with magic so weapons can be much more cheaply manufactured due to not needing so much more moving parts and such. I'm sure anyone who has done mechanic work must have gotten into a situation where they would love to have telekinesis because they can't reach a bolt or screw located in some god awful location.
Healing would be the in story example of this. Regenerating tissue and such is so complex that, for the most part, modern science is only assisting the body at best rather than actually straight up healing, but here magic does it ezpz.

As mentioned, theres also a difference just within the fps genre. There a large spectrum from the casual [nearly fantasy] shooters with weapons having infinite ammo and no recoil to more realistic with weapon jams and such.

I think this story is assuming the MC to be a player of the casual shooter type. I would say your first two points might apply in to even those types of games, but the latter two not so much as games cannot produce a lot of things you can sense IRL like refracted shadows, vibrations, minute sounds, etc, and definitely the adrenaline is different.

(Maybe if you remember how nuclear work and step to make it, and maybe you remember tactics that our world create and use in world war. Maybe then you can be useful.)
As said earlier in the thread, nuclear physics is insanely difficult. Not only that, you'd need a foundation of molecular and quantum science to even begin the calculations necessary for proper enrichment, radioactive decay, neutron production, criticality and hundred other details needed to make a bomb work. That's assuming this world even has the scientific advancement necessary for such things. Also, this war feels more like WW1 than WW2, and the science of the nuclear bomb developed around the time of WW2. So even if all other things align, which is unlikely especially given the magic, I doubt the universities and professors of this world have the background for nuclear physics. Even in WW2, this was considered cutting edge and required billions and the sharpest minds of the age to make it work.

What would be interesting is trying to create a magical equivalent of a nuclear bomb. Perhaps easier given the fact that magic here runs on mental thought and skill rather than the physics of this world. Several options spring to mind:
  1. Simple explosion magic scaled up, efficiency is questionable if not optimized
  2. Alternatively, a magical means to create immense pressure difference at a short period of time, for simplicity. Goal is to create a powerful shockwave without need for explosives, which might make the spell easier
  3. Simple kinetic spells. Meteor strikes are possible, so perhaps we can accelerate a sufficiently dense artillery round to immense speed by way of acceleration magic, or Orion-drive style explosive spells on the base of the round
  4. Concentrating mana into intense energy density, then detonating/releasing it. If there is an electromagnetic field equivalent for magic, use that to increase yield and efficiency. If that is the case, using plausible fusion reactor designs would be ideal. If not, default to magnetic field equivalent for better simplicity, if poorer yield
  5. Wide range but simplified transmutation spell to convert atmospheric gas to a toxic variant, an easy target is to convert carbon dioxide to monoxide, or oxygen to ozone, assuming magical chemistry knowledge is sufficient to pull this off.
  6. Mental/Psionic magic to demoralize and/or drive enemy combatants insane. As this will be a weapon and not population control, simplicity will be prioritized over finesse. Hopefully this will make the spell easier and stronger.
  7. Curses, but scaled up. This is questionable though, given the very specific rules and sacrifices needed to pull off curses.
  8. Good old fashioned necromancy. Raise your dead soldiers. An additional ID-protection system to prevent enemy necromancers from raising your dead while still be able to raise yours is optional, but recommended

These are all off the top of my head after 10-15 minutes of light speculation. The presence of literal reality-altering powers really opens up avenues for more creative means of murdering your fellow men for pointless reasons.

However, given the fact that 1) None of these seem present, and 2) Meteor spells require dedicated Archmages, implies that magical development is not on the level required for scaling up offensive spells. Thusly, the options I stated aim to use (hopefully) simple versions of spells, with only range and perhaps strength scaled up. There is also the concern of mana resources, which seem to be expensive and limited. Thusly, simplicity again.

TLDR: Nukes may be not be an option, but magic, creativity and some knowledge of modern science can make effective alternatives

The thought of putting together a lengthy, well thought out post on a manga thread speculating about warfare in a fictional universe vs the real one is so foreign to me. I'm genuinely so grateful that there are people like you, it does a lot for the community

Look, i love a good "fuck you" towards armchair experts as the next guy, but this was done much better in "All is quiet on the Western Front".
