That's not why she was crying. Anjo cried because that was, as far as we know from flashbacks, the first time a teacher praised her efforts. She tried hard and he acknowledged her instead of dismissing her efforts like her previous teachers did

There’s a definite reason. I bet you she won’t EVER forget to write her name on a test again. Especially one that would decide her future, and will allow no “take backs “.

People might not like this style of enforced teaching, but it works a lot better than coddling.

Possibly relevant to this chapter: there's a ton of undiagnosed ADHD in Japan.

Had a friend who taught in Japan for a few years and from what he told me the mental health support there is almost non-existent for students. He had a student that was on medication for ADHD and he was like a pariah. Since he was on medication people assumed that it was like taking steroids. That he was getting a leg up in his studies while not realizing that the medication was to help him be at the status quo. He said the student hated being on it because others thought that he was weak for it. Really is tough to be a student that's neurodivergent in Japan or other places where mental health support is not really cared about. You always just have to "power through it".
