It took me like 4 re-reads because I couldn't get why they would be disappointed that Aria was a girl all along. Then I realize that it means the receptionist and Shuri doesn't have a hot guy to crush on to in 5 years.

Put simply, it’s gap moe. People like Aria more because she’s the murder loli, not in spite of it. From a more charitable perspective, it shows she’s capable of taking care of her own problems, and will do whatever it takes to protect the people she cares about. From a less charitable perspective, she’s a morally and emotionally stunted child trapped in a cruel world that won’t let her act her age, and who has yet to learn the impact her actions can have on the hearts of her loved ones. From the least charitable angle, she’s a Machiavellian psycho disturbing the order of society for her own twisted idea of independence, especially considering she knows there’s an easier life ahead of her via her estranged noble lineage. Whether you empathise with her or want to repair her heart, would become her accomplice or bring her around to justice, or just enjoy the beauty in a futile struggle against fate, Aria is an alluring character. But also a mary sue.

They also basically own a cat together (a cat that can take on a dragon mind you), and just go about their lives living as they always have, adventuring, murdering enemies, saving people, spending time with their cat (fighting impossibly strong things). You know, normal yuri couple things.

But this would not be completely out of character? She is the heroine of an eroge for girls, and she got corrupted by the horny fantasies of an extradimensional fujoshi. She should be thirsty for the cock as much as the fake heroine if not even more.
